01 / The idea

A learning research program needs a disciplined way to revise confidence. Bayes’ rule offers one, provided the hypotheses generate probabilities for observations. It cannot turn an undefined claim such as “Alpha 1 influences everything” into a numerical probability merely by assigning it a confident prior. Begin with a bounded parameter, such as a resonance shift or a retention time, and a measurement model. Then examine how the data modify the prior distribution. The Bayesian workflow literature emphasizes checking and comparison as well as fitting. This page proposes how to apply those ideas without treating a posterior as proof that a speculative mechanism exists.

Write a generative model

Specify the process that could generate the readings: the physical response, calibration offset, environmental terms and noise distribution. Simulate data from this model before fitting observations. Do the simulated signals fall in a plausible range? Can the model represent ordinary drift without mislabeling it as a new force? A prior on a geometric coupling should have units and a defensible scale. If almost any observation can be reproduced by unconstrained parameters, fitting success offers little discrimination. The useful question is whether the model makes sufficiently sharp predictions that measurements can challenge.

Check sensitivity and prediction

Repeat the inference under several reasonable prior choices and publish their effects. A conclusion that changes dramatically is prior-sensitive, which is informative when evidence is weak. Examine posterior predictive checks on features not used as the sole fitting target. A model may match a mean while missing temporal correlations or extreme events. For cross-scale claims, test whether one shared parameter predicts withheld systems or whether each system requires its own tuning. Shared vocabulary is not a shared model, and a visually smooth posterior curve does not establish good predictive calibration.

Do not spend the same data twice

Exploration can guide a better model, but data used to choose its shape have already influenced the result. Reserve an independent test set or disclose the selection process. Sequential updates also require care: multiplying likelihoods as if overlapping datasets were independent inflates confidence. Store dataset identifiers, overlap notes and protocol versions in the evidence register. For Alpha 1, leave the status qualitative until a concrete observation model is available. Numerical precision should follow mathematical specification and empirical relevance, rather than functioning as a visual symbol of certainty.

The mathematical lens

p(θ | D, M) ∝ p(D | θ, M) p(θ | M)

The posterior depends on data D, parameter θ and model M; the equation does not assign truth to an unspecified theory.

Turn it into a question.

Proposed test / not a reported result
Question
Does the conclusion persist under reasonable priors and predictive checks?
Method
Fit declared alternatives, simulate predictions and compare with independent observations.
What would count against it?
Strong prior sensitivity or systematic predictive failure limits the interpretation.
What to carry forward

Update a specified model, not a slogan.
